据美国国际教育协会(American Association For International Education)于2019年11月18日发布的数据显示，2018年至2019年期间，中国仍是美国最大的留学生来源地。然而，由于签证等问题，在美留学的中国学生人数增长速度已达到10年来的最低水平。

美国国务院有关人士在回答中央广播电视总频道的提问时说，中国学生的签证总体情况比较乐观，中国学生签证通过率下降的原因很多，但美方将为中国学生签证提供便利。

美国国际教育协会成每年11月发布关于在美国际学生和学者现状的数据，是美国留学领域的权威报告。根据该报告，目前，留学生占美国高等教育总人数的5.5%。根据美国商务部的数据，2018年国际学生对美国经济的贡献为447亿美元。
